I said to him that if I had received the Powerbook under the same conditions, I'd just put Linux on it or buy an external hard drive for his music. He wasn't enthusiastic about those prospects. He still wanted me to find out how to get a current Mac OS on it. I'm posting here as a favor to him. I've voiced the same concerns that are mentioned here, but it's his money. I hope that he'll see that with others voicing the same concerns that it's in his best interest to leave the Powerbook alone.
Boot off the external by holding down Option before the Apple icon appears. More bang for the buck than doing an internal drive swap. I would feel better about pirating Tiger than Leopard, though, because Apple doesn't support Tiger at all at this point. People who sell Apple software secondhand are scam artists not really. But they do overcharge by a considerable margin.
Performance won't be quite as good, but if this is just a music server then that won't be an issue. Your friend would just need to get hold of a retail OX Then, as mentioned, he'd just boot the computer by holding 'option' at boot and select the external drive as the boot source. This way, it doesn't matter if the internal drive is dying because he'd never need to use it. Although it will show up on the desktop. The only significant disadvantage, as I said, is that he'd have to have that external drive connected permanently.
Still, that's the way to go if he wants to minimize cost and hassle and still be able to use a nice, fat drive. Boot the PowerBook in target disk mode and clone the external disk to the PowerBook.
